Week 6 Rankings

So far my fantasy season has been pretty frustrating, but week 5 took the cake.  Thursday night I was looking at playing Andre Roberts because I was worried Lance Moore might be out Sunday, but I didn't know for sure.  I didn't want to miss out on a tasty matchup for Lance, so I waited.  Sure enough, I found out Friday that he'd be out against the Chargers.  Roberts didn't do much, but he got 4.2 fantasy points on my bench (which would've helped...stay tuned).  In hindsight, the logical choice would have been to upgrade Devery Henderson and fill him in, but I didn't do that.  I stuck with my rankings and the amount of targets guys have been getting thusfar, and I chose Greg Little (who ended up with zero catches).  That zero really hurt because my Chargers played well on Sunday night, and going into the 4th quarter of that game I only needed 4 points from Rivers, Mathews, and Gates (combined!).

Of course, that didn't happen.

Rivers threw a pick, but I was still OK.  I knew he'd get the ball back in a close game, and he did.  He marched down the field and I thought I had the game won with a 20-30 yard pass to Gates, but then that got called back (flag: offensive pass interference).  I'm in a league with fractional points and I was actually tied at 95.60, until Rivers fumbled on the last play and lost me two points.  So that was it.  Two points.  

I feel like I stuck to my guns and my rankings, but it just didn't quite work out.  Injuries are killing me right now, but I have to try to find some points out there somewhere.  So far, guys on my team who have been injured include: Mathews, Nicks, Forte, Gates, Moore...and now AP is dealing with an ankle injury and will probably be questionable this weekend.

But enough complaining.  It's time to get down to business.  Thankfully my league is highly competitive, and while I'm sitting at a horrid 1-4, there are six teams tied for 2nd place at 3-2 (more or less depending on their total points).  A couple of wins and I'm right back in this thing!  It's a 13 game fantasy regular season, so we're more than 1/3 of the way through now.  It's time to put up or shut up.  Injuries and bye weeks are going to kill me the next couple of weeks, but they're going to be hurting other people too. I'm really feeling the pressure for the Ws now, and there's no time like the present to get one.  Hopefully I can have enough guys to make a team this week.  I guess I'll have to make that happen, based on the rankings below.  Enjoy!

14.Tony Romo 15.Ryan Fitzpatrick 16.Alex Smith 17.Kevin Kolb 18.Matt Schaub 19.Christian Ponder 20.Carson Palmer 21.Josh Freeman 22.Ryan Tannehill 23.Brandon Weeden 24.Sam Bradford A lot of the top quarterbacks are going up against tough defenses this week, so I'm going to shake things up a bit.  I missed on Andy Dalton last week, but I was definitely right in ranking Luck as highly as I did.  He was impressive against Green Bay, and we'll see how he does on the road this week against the Jets secondary (I think he'll keep rolling).  Peyton just barely edged out Eli in fantasy points in week six, so I would've lost that bet (though not by much...both had great games).  I have Peyton ranked very highly this week, as I think he'll show up big this time on MNF.  I'm dropping RGIII considerably this week, obviously due to the concussion.  If he does play, I think he could be a little shaken up, hesitant, or potentially not even finish the game as a precautionary measure.  If I were to update my rankings later on in the week, I'd probably drop him even further.  Big Ben is well into my top ten this week, as I think he'll light up the Titans on Thursday night.  I'd be surprised if he didn't have 300 yards and at least 2 TDs.

I kept the faith in Ryan Mathews, and he almost helped get me a win last week (and he would have if Norv had left him in the game at the end...why Ronnie Brown was in there in the 4th quarter I have NO idea!).  Mendenhall moves up the board this week, and new additions Alex Green and LaRod Stephens-Howling are also both additions to my actual fantasy team.  With Forte and Lance Moore on a bye (and Nicks and AP potentially not going Sunday), I might just end up playing both of them.  How sad is that?  We'll see just how sad it is because I think they both have a good opportunity to produce this week. 2.Rob Gronkowski 3.Vernon Davis 4.Jason Witten 5.Antonio Gates 6.Kyle Rudolph 7.Owen Daniels 8.Fred Davis 9.Aaron Hernandez 10.Brandon Pettigrew 11.Brent Celek 12.Dennis Pitta 13.Martellus Bennett 14.Heath Miller 15.Jared Cook 16.Jermaine Gresham 17.Scott Chandler 18.Jacob Tamme I dropped Bennett down a bit last week, and he didn't do much.  I'm still concerned about his consistency, so I'm going to keep him outside of the top ten for now.  He and Dennis Pitta are kind of the same person to me right now, so they're ranked right next to each other.  I can't believe it, but Tony Gonzalez has earned the top spot.  I must say that I was dead wrong about him this year.  I thought the guy had to run out of gas at some point, and although he will, it doesn't look like it's this year.  Matt Ryan should torch Oakland, and I think there will be plenty of yards and touchdowns to go around in Atlanta.  I'm keeping Gates in my top ten even though he continues to suck.  I mean, he doesn't suck.  He's getting a lot of targets, but he's dropping touchdowns and getting offensive pass interference calls.  So that stuff sucks.  We'll see if he can turn it around and keep up with old man Gonzo.  Also, as of this writing, Finley looks questionable to play against the Texans, so I've removed him from the list and added Aaron Hernandez around where he would be (assuming Hernandez is back this week).

12.Bengals 13.Patriots 14.Redskins The Texans looked solid once again, but they lost Cushing to a season-ending ACL injury, and Green Bay is coming to town this week.  I think the Packers will play strong and bounce back after last week's loss in Indy, so I don't see Houston's defense being at the very top this week.  I sure hope the Ravens are the top defense because that would mean Romo might have another horrible game like he had two weeks ago.  I would enjoy that a great deal.  The Dolphins are looking good on defense, and they'll be playing at home against the Rams.  That's a pretty good matchup and another game the Fins can win.  That being said, I also have the Rams D ranked pretty highly, so we'll see if that ends up being a 13-10 game like I think it will. Only three days until my wedding, so this will be the last you hear from me for a while.  I might update my rankings from a beach in Maui, but I doubt it.  Hopefully my writing and rankings don't suck after I get a ring on this finger! Week 5 Rankings

I need to have an intervention...with myself.  

We're now coming up on week 5 of the NFL season, and my fantasy team is 1-3.  It's time to forget about who I drafted and in what round I drafted them.  Ryan Mathews looks nothing like a great keeper right now, and Ryan Fitzpatrick is outplaying Philip Rivers.  I ranked Fitzpatrick three spots above Rivers in week 4, but did I play him?  Of course I didn't!  Granted, I still would have lost my matchup by a mile, but every point counts.  At 1-3, I could be looking at needing those extra points for a tiebreaker to get into the playoffs.  You never know.  And while this week I have Rivers ranked higher, I need to look at all of my matchups and make better decisions.  If Hakeem Nicks ever decides to come back but he's not at 100%, I might need to continue playing Lance Moore over him.  Hell, I might need to consider the waiver wire or try to make some trades here pretty soon.  Mark Ingram isn't doing much of anything, and it's about time to cut ties there.  If he turns out to be an amazing keeper for someone in 2013, so be it.  I'm trying to win it all this year, and I'm clearly feeling the pressure for some much needed Ws.

Most likely many of you can apply this same strategy to your teams.  I bet a lot of people sat Chris Johnson in week 4 (and rightfully so).  He finally decided to play a little bit, so that decision to put him back in got a little bit harder.  But the point is to not dwell on that 2nd round pick you made who is stinking up the joint.  If you need to put in Alfred Morris or Willis McGahee over Steven or Fred Jackson (no relation), then that's what you do.  Find yourself wanting to start Reggie Wayne over Jeremy Maclin?  You'd better!

...and I need to take my own advice.

We're now at just over a week til the big day for me, but the ranking must go on.  Even more bye weeks now, and I hope I can catch a break or two in the weeks to come instead of being the one dishing out the easy wins for other people.  Feel free to pick me apart in the comments.

12.Rams 13.Eagles 14.Falcons I almost want to just stop ranking defenses too.  It's so hard!  Arizona was my top pick for week 4, and they were in the top 10, but I didn't give enough love to the Niners and Texans.  Those two blew up against the Jets and Titans, respectively.  I'm really surprised Seattle didn't get to the quarterback or cause more turnovers against the Rams, but they were respectable.  I'm going to continue to rank them highly every week because they're so solid.  I mean, they still only allowed 19 points on the road.  The Vikings are looking like a solid defense, and I actually picked them up in my league this week.  All of the other teams I have ranked above them are taken, so I need to stick to my rankings.  Hopefully it'll work out for me this week.  Good luck everyone (except House this week...sorry dude). Week 4 Rankings

He still got 8 targets, but he didn't do much with them.  Andre Brown blew up, and Barden stepped in nicely for Nicks, so those two things also didn't help Cruz's value.  Apparently me giving him the kiss of death didn't help either (look out this week, AJ!).  Larry Fitzgerald climbs back up after an AFC Offensive Player of the Week performance, and I'm also regaining confidence in Brandon Lloyd's top-10 potential.  I'm moving Kenny Britt up a bit this week, and I see him potentially being inside the top-20 for the remainder of the season.  We'll see if he blows up this week on the field, within one of his knees, or off the field at a strip club.  Any of those things are very possible, but I'm going out on a limb and saying that Britt will be back. 12.Broncos 13.Giants 14.Dolphins I was right about the Bears against St. Louis last week, though they were barely edged out for the top spot to the Cardinals.  Thus, Arizona tops my rankings this week (especially since they are at home again, this time against a rookie quarterback and the rest of the Dolphins).  Christian Ponder looked good against the 49ers, which just goes to show you that the safe pick doesn't always pan out.  I'm dropping San Fran down a little going on the road again.  I definitely didn't give the Seahawks enough credit with Green Bay coming into town, but they look like a defense that will be a start every week no matter what.  I like them a lot this week against St. Louis obviously, but also I think they'll stay in the top 5 most weeks throughout the remainder of the season.
