2018 Fantasy Football Week 2 Rankings

Image result for hurricane florenceLast week I got my rankings done early, but this week they're a little late.  At least I have a good reason for running late though, and her name is Florence.  My family was supposed to be in Nags Head all week, and I was planning to do my rankings while sitting on the beach or at least on the house's screened porch.  But that didn't work out with this stupid storm rolling in.  We had to evacuate, and we didn't want our vacation to end, so we drove south (along with a LOT of other people).  We thought we'd either find a place in northern Florida or maybe even drive all the way to my grandma's in Fort Lauderdale.  Everything was getting booked left and right, but we finally found a place in Jacksonville Beach, and we spent the night there after a long drive.  We had a great day at the beach the next day, and it was well worth the drive to see our daughter excited about getting in the ocean for the first time.  But as we looked at what the hurricane was doing, we began to worry we might have a hard time getting back to Virginia if we stayed in Florida a couple more days.  So we packed up again and drove all the way home.

All of that to say that I haven't had a ton of time to work on my rankings this week since I've been going back and forth between driving and trying to make the most of our vacation.  But with the Ravens and Bengals kicking off Week 2 tonight, I wanted to at least get my initial rankings out there while this game is on.  In fact, I actually have a new tool to help me do my rankings now, so you'll notice I'm working with a new format below.  I'm now able to login to the FantasyPros Expert Platform, and I'm leveraging their rankings tool.  So now instead of comparing my rankings to ESPN's, I'll be comparing them to the FantasyPros Expert Consensus Rankings.  I'll recap my picks from last week after the rankings table, and I'll do it one position at a time (as usual).  Then I'll give you a couple of players I'm high/low on at each position, but it'll now be compared to the ECR.

Bear with me while I work through this new format, but I'm hoping it'll make my rankings even better.  I was able to get my picks into the tool before tonight's kickoff, so my Ravens & Bengals players are locked.  I'm not totally sure how the tool works just yet, but I might even be able to do a Sunday morning update and have my rankings automatically updated in my blog.  Stay tuned.

To the rankings!

QUARTERBACKS
In Week 1, I was high on Andy Dalton (ESPN #17, ME #10) and down on Patrick Mahomes (ESPN #15, ME NOT RANKED).  I wasn't too far off with Dalton because he had a pair of TDs and finished as a top-15 fantasy QB - ahead of guys like Cam Newton and Matthew Stafford.  Primetime Andy always worries me, so I didn't even rank him in my top-20 QBs this week.  Of course he's lighting up this Baltimore defense right now, and I'm sure C.J. Mosley leaving the game early is helping his cause. As for Mahomes, I feel like Tyreek Hill made him look good against the Chargers, and Mahomes finished as the #2 fantasy QB behind...Ryan Fitzpatrick?  Sure, why not?!  So I was wrong there.

Image result for matthew staffordThis week, you'll notice I'm 4 spots higher on Aaron Rodgers and Matthew Stafford versus the experts.  Did you see what Rodgers did against a good Bears defense last week on one leg?  I know the Vikings are good too, but as long as he plays, I don't understand ranking Rodgers any lower than a top-3 QB.  As for Stafford, I get why the experts would shy away from him after that disaster of a game on Monday night (against the JETS!).  Well, I say he bounces back this week in San Francisco and easily finishes as a top-10 play.  That run game still looks terrible, and I expect Stafford to throw the ball 40+ times.  I think he'll do a better job with those passes in Week 2.

In that same game, I'm down on Jimmy Garoppolo.  I realize Detroit's defense looked terrible in Week 1, but the Niners offense didn't look great either.  I suppose something has to give, but I'm just not that confident yet in Jimmy G.  It's possible Marquise Goodwin misses this game, in which case Jimmy would need to rely on Garcon, Pettis, and Kittle as his best receiving options.  Yikes.  I'm also down on Cam Newton this week, as he travels to Atlanta to face a Falcons defense that made Nick Foles look like, well, Nick Foles from a couple of years ago.  The Panther offense didn't do much in Week 1 either, and without Greg Olsen, I think Cam could struggle on the road in this game.

RUNNING BACKS
Last week I was high on Latavius Murray (ESPN #47, ME #35) and down on Kerryon Johnson (ESPN #36, ME NOT RANKED).  While Latavius didn't finish where I ranked him, he did get 11 carries (mostly in the 4th quarter) in what was mostly an easy win.  This is basically what I expected and discussed when I made this pick, but I thought he might find the endzone and also find himself as a usable FLEX option.  He's a great handcuff in case Cook gets injured, but I still feel like he'll get some touchdowns and have some standalone value this season.  As for Kerryon Johnson, he finished worse than Murray and was outside of the top-50 fantasy RBs in Week 1.  Fantasy owners would be wise to play it safe and wait to see what happens with this Detroit backfield situation.  I'm still not ranking the rookie in my top-50 just yet.

Image result for tevin colemanThis week, I'm about 10 spots higher than the experts on Tevin Coleman and James White.  I'm not convinced Devonta Freeman even plays this week, so I'm down on him versus the ECR.  Even if Freeman does play, I feel like he could be limited with his injury.  I think Tevin Coleman would easily be a top-20 fantasy RB in that scenario.  As for James White, he seems to be the only healthy running back for the Patriots right now.  And actually regardless of whether or not Burkhead and/or Michel play against the Jags, I still like White to be heavily involved in the game plan.  He's an excellent PPR play this week, but I think he'll be a great value in standard leagues as well.

WIDE RECEIVERS
I was high on Devin Funchess (ESPN #38, ME #24) and down on Robert Woods (ESPN #28, ME #40) last week, but both actually finished outside of the top-50.  At least Funchess was the "best" receiver for the Panthers, but Woods is sharing targets with Cooks and Cupp, and I'm not that confident in his usage.  With Greg Olsen set to miss extended time, I'll continue to be high on Funchess.  As for Woods, I'm not ready to trust him in this offense that has Cooks in it now.

This week, I'm 13 spots higher than the experts on John Brown, and he just found the end zone in this game.  He'll definitely be a top-30 WR for the second week in a row, and he might even end up as a top-12 WR this week.  If you scroll way down my list, you'll also notice I'm high on Ryan Grant.  He'll be heading back to Washington this week to face his old team, and I think he could have a good game in this spot.  He caught 8 of 9 targets in Week 1 for 59 yards, and he's clearly Luck's #2 WR option in this offense.  I ranked him in my top-50 WRs, and I could see him cracking my top-35 to 40 in the weeks to come.  One guy I'm down on about 10 spots versus the experts is Marvin Jones.  I mentioned how I like Stafford to bounce back against the Niners this week, but he looked for Tate and Golladay a lot in Week 1.  I think Marvin Jones becomes more of a boom/bust type of receiver, and I think this week could be a bust.  I guess we'll see...

TIGHT ENDS
Most weeks I likely won't differ much from ESPN's tight end rankings, but in Week 1 I was high on Jordan Reed (ESPN #10, ME #4)  and down on Travis Kelce (ESPN #2, ME #8).  I nailed both of those picks.  With Jordan Reed, the issue has always been health.  When he's healthy, you start him.  He was a top-5 fantasy TE in Week 1, and he likely will be so as long as he can stay away from the sideline.  As for Kelce, he had just 1 catch for 6 yards and finished outside of the top 50 TEs.  While I obviously didn't see that coming, I do think you need to temper expectations with Mahomes until we see more from the two.

Image result for will dissly seahawks
I'm still down on Kelce this week, but lets take a look at my guys in the 14-17 range to see who I'm high/low on versus the ECR.  In addition to Kelce, I'm also not feeling Trey Burton just yet.  I want to see him do something in this new offense before I trust him as my fantasy tight end.  I'm also down on Evan Engram, who I talked down in my preseason article as likely taking a huge step back in his sophomore season.  I'm high on Antonio Gates, who I just feel like will have a 2 catch game, but one of those catches will be in the end zone.  I also kind of like Will Dissly at Chicago on Monday night.  With Doug Baldwin out, Russell Wilson may look to his rookie tight end again to make some plays.  If you lost someone like Olsen or Walker in Week 1 and want to have a guy to watch on MNF, pick up Dissly and see what happens!

DEFENSES
Image result for cowboys defenseLast week there wasn't really a fantasy defense I was that high/low on versus the ESPN experts, but I said that would surely change in Week 2.  Well, now I'm comparing to the ECR, and it's much easier to pick out those differences.  The biggest differences in my rankings this week are the Saints and Cowboys.  I'm not believing in the Saints D after they gave up so many points to the Fitzpatrick Buccaneers in Week 1, so I have them outside of my top-10.  As for the Cowboys, they actually did pretty well in Carolina in Week 1, and I like for them to step up against Eli Manning and company in their home opener.  I'm not sure how good this defense is just yet, but I think they could be a top-15 unit this week.

FLEX
This is not something that I manually put together on the FantasyPros site.  The tool actually put this Flex position together for me from my RB/WR/TE rankings, so I'm not sure how useful it'll be.  I just wanted to point that out in case people were looking at that for their flex spot.  Coincidentally, it put Michael Crabtree and Matt Breida right next to each other in my FLEX rankings, and I barely decided to start Crabtree over Breida this week in my money league.  We'll see if it ends up being the right call.

Good luck to everyone in Week 2!
(Except you, Terry...)

Bart

2018 Fantasy Football Week 1 Rankings

Unless you're like me and have a last minute draft tomorrow night, by now you've likely drafted your fantasy teams.  I sure hope that's the case because the season starts in less than 48 hours with the Falcons versus the Eagles on Thursday night.  My only hope is for there to be a repeat of last year's NFL opening game when the visiting Chiefs stomped the Patriots in Foxboro.  I don't know if that same scenario is likely to happen in Philly, but it's definitely possible with some key injuries for the defending Super Bowl champs.

With the NFL regular season upon us, it's time to get into the weekly rankings.  Below you'll find my best guesses for Week 1, and as usual, I'll give you some commentary after each position with a guy I like and a guy I don't like versus the ESPN consensus (standard/non-PPR) rankings.  I'll start the year off by ranking a ton of RBs and WRs, but I'll definitely narrow the list down by the time the Week 4 bye comes around.  This is an early Tuesday edition of what's usually my weekly Wednesday rankings, but with my other fantasy draft tomorrow night, I thought I'd get these done a day early.

Let's get to the rankings, shall we?

Image result for andy daltonI'm high on: Andy Dalton (ESPN #17, ME #10)
Is anyone afraid of Indy's defense?  I'm sure Andy Dalton isn't.  He has a healthy Tyler Eifert (at least for Week 1), and that's a big reason I'm ranking him in my top-10.  I also think Andrew Luck could start out fairly well, and I see this game being somewhat of a shootout.  The Red Rifle is a very startable fantasy quarterback against the Colts, and A.J. Green is likely going to start the year off with a monster game.

I'm down on: Patrick Mahomes (ESPN #15, ME NOT RANKED)
Forgive me for not believing in (basically) a rookie QB on the road against one of the best defenses in the league, but I'm not ready to buy into Mahomes just yet.  Everyone likes his upside/weapons, and I do too.  I'd just be a little nervous about starting him against this defense in Week 1.  I'd feel much better about a widely available QB like the guys I ranked 16-19.

RBs

48.LeGarrette Blount
49.Corey Clement
50.Theo Riddick

I'm high on: Latavius Murray (ESPN #47, ME #35)
I like Dalvin Cook this year, but how sure are we that he'll have a full workload Week 1 coming off a serious knee injury?  I like Latavius Murray to get some carries in this game and likely all of the goal line work.  That could mean 40-50 yards and a touchdown against a weak Niner defense.  The Vikings could play it somewhat safe with Dalvin and could also have a decent lead against San Fran, all of which would make Latavius a sneaky FLEX option.

Image result for kerryon johnson running backs lionsI'm down on: Kerryon Johnson (ESPN #36, ME NOT RANKED)
Just like with Mahomes, I'm a little shy about ranking a rookie RB so highly in Week 1.  And it's not just because he's a rookie RB.  It's because he's a rookie RB who has three other RBs who are likely to be in the mix as well.  This backfield situation in Detroit is so murky, I don't see how you could be confident about starting Kerryon Johnson on Monday night.  Maybe he goes off like Kareem Hunt did last year, but I highly doubt it.  I'd wait a couple of weeks to see how this backfield situation shakes out before plugging this rookie into my lineup.  As for guys like Saquon and Royce Freeman, I'd go for it.

44.Mike Wallace
45.Rishard Matthews

47.Jordy Nelson
48.Mike Williams
49.Sterling Shepard
50.John Brown

I'm high on: Devin Funchess (ESPN #38, ME #24)
Image result for devin funchessSo everyone agrees Cam Newton will be a top-5 fantasy QB in his opener against the Cowboys, but his #1 WR is 38th?  Yeah I don't get that.  Greg Olsen is healthy, and the Panthers added Torrey Smith and rookie D.J. Moore.  But it's Funchess who really knows this offense and is a primary option for Cam in the passing game.  I like for him to get a ton of targets in this contest and easily finish in the WR2 conversation this week.

I'm down on: Robert Woods (ESPN #28, ME #40)
I'm also a little down on Cooper Kupp, but I'm high on Brandin Cooks versus the ESPN experts.  This basically comes down to the fact that I don't expect all three of those WRs to be in the top-30 this week.  Is it possible?  Sure.  Is it probable?  No, it's not.  I do think the Rams will destroy Oakland on Monday Night Football, but I also think it'll be with a heavy dose of Gurley.  I wouldn't count on all of these Ram receivers to produce in Week 1, and that's the problem I have with ESPN ranking all of them so highly.

TEs
1.Rob Gronkowski
2.Zach Ertz
3.Jimmy Graham
4.Jordan Reed
5.Delanie Walker
6.Greg Olsen
7.Kyle Rudolph
8.Travis Kelce
9.Tyler Eifert
10.Trey Burton
11.Evan Engram
12.David Njoku
Image result for jordan reed

I'm high on: Jordan Reed (ESPN #10, ME #4)
Call it a homer pick if you want, but I'm also high on Eifert.  These guys have trouble staying on the field, but when they're healthy, you get them into your fantasy lineup.  Alex Smith likes throwing to his tight end, and Jordan Reed is a good one.  I just hope he comes out of Week 1 in one piece...

I'm down on: Travis Kelce (ESPN #2, ME #8)
I obviously don't trust Mahomes just yet, and the Chargers have a good defense.  You're starting Kelce if you drafted him, but I just think #2 is a bit high for him this week.

DEF
1.Ravens
2.Jags
3.Lions
4.Rams
5.Saints
6.Vikings
7.Chargers
8.Broncos
9.Patriots
10.Panthers
11.Packers
12.Titans

There's not really a fantasy defense I'm that high/low on versus the ESPN experts, but I'm sure that'll change in Week 2.

Until then, good luck to everyone in Week 1!
